Weather forecast says Monsoon may reach Delhi by this weekend

New Delhi:  New Delhi may have its first brush with this year’s southwest monsoon by the week-end, Indian Meteorological Department has predicted.

The much-awaited pre-monsoon showers may arrive by Friday and within the next 72 hours monsoon rainfall is likely to cool the parched capital.

The heat wave condition will abate in the next 24 hours. The favourable weather system developing in and around Delhi is “quite strong” and likely to continue for the next 4-5 days, top IMD sources said.

Normal date of monsoon’s arrival in the capital is June 29 but monsoon missed its date this time.

Monsoon entered in a break period last week, delaying its arrival in almost the entire central, western and northern parts of the country. The situation, however, improved in the last 48 hours.

The IMD on Thursday predicted that the conditions were favourable for the further advance of southwest monsoon into more areas of Gujarat, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and some parts of Haryana (including Delhi) and Punjab in the next two or three days.

The onset of monsoon over Kerala was delayed this year after which it made a sluggish progress, drawing concerns from the farming community, because of which monsoon is still 30 per cent deficient with barely any rainfall in 82 per cent of land mass.

In its second forecast issued in July, the weather office marginally downgraded the seasonal forecast – from 99 per cent of average rainfall to 96 per cent keeping it within the normal range.

It expected 98 per cent of average rainfall for the country in July, which is crucial for sowing khariff crops including paddy.
